The Oceanus Plasticus exhibition is presented as a modern version of the warnings and curses about the sea that appeared in the bestiaries of medieval cartography. In those ancient maps, sailors were alerted to the dangers of crossing the boundaries of the natural world. Fantastic sea creatures would emerge in those remote places to devour them. In this new bestiary displayed at the Aquarium, the fatal consequences of human behavior—marked by a defiant arrogance that oversteps the limits of natural resources—are represented in a poetic manner.
