The Oceanographic Foundation of Gipuzkoa has a long history of research that goes back more than 100 years. The research interests have been diverse, all dedicated to a better understanding of the marine environment and its preservation. In fact, the Oceanographic Society, now part of the Foundation, was the driver of the first oceanographic magazine in Spain, in which articles and essays of the top researchers of the time were published.
In this respect, one of the research lines is related to the marine and maritime heritage of our littoral, in the endeavour to shed light on the wealth of our shipbuilding tradition and history. The result of these works has crystallised into several projects and particularly the publication dedicated to the naval constructor, Gerónimo de Aizpurua and to the Mutiozabal shipbuilding saga.
On the other hand, along with the University of the Basque Country and AZTI, the Gipuzkoa Oceanographic Foundation proposes the consolidation of marine research in the Basque Country under which each of the participating parties, according to their strengths, will tackle an area of the marine research panorama in order to optimise the funds assigned to R&D at key moments such as today.
One of our most immediate projects is therefore to create an important infrastructure dedicated to the research and exhibition of pelagic species. This major project is driven by the Chairman of the Oceanographic Foundation of Gipuzkoa, D. Vicente Zaragüeta Laffitte.
